American writer and director Wes Craven, known as the producer of the film "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Scream", died on the 77th year of his life at his home in Los Angeles. This informs Associated Press. The last few years Craven fought brain cancer.


Craven was born in Cleveland, Ohio, August 2, 1939. He received a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University. After that he spent some time teaching in colleges of Pennsylvania and New York.
Craven's career in film began with porn, where he worked under a pseudonym. The first films, which he released under his own name in 1972, was "The Last House on the Left." This is a horror film about teenage girls who were kidnapped by bandits escaped from prison.
One of the most famous works of Craven was the "Nightmare on Elm Street." The central character in a horror movie, filmed in 1984, is a maniac Freddy Krueger, able to kill victims in their own dreams. On motives of the film, which has become one of the most cash and popular in its genre, was shot several sequels, released numerous comics.
"Scream" was shot in 1996, also marked the beginning of a series of horror films of the same name. Its central character - Sidney Prescott, which throughout the film serve different people in a ghost mask.
During his career, Craven took about 30 movies.
At Craven left a wife - producer Iya Labunka, son, daughter and stepdaughter.
Its condolences on the death of the director in social networks expressed his colleagues, including actress Courteney Cox, Angela Bassett, director and screenwriter of the film "Sinister" Scott Derrickson and others.
